On Saturday, we held our brand new ultra-cycling challenge, ‘Race from the Base’ and what a brilliant day we had!

Hundreds of participants took part, cycling one of three routes: 30km (The Circuit), 60km (The Cruise) and 100km (The Climb). All routes started and finished at our airbase and there were three pit-stops along the route which provided a well-earned rest and refreshments for those that wanted them.

There was a fantastic atmosphere within the ‘Basecamp Village’ where music was played out by Keep106 and an array of fun-filled activities and stalls were there for everyone to enjoy.

Those who took part included members of our crew and patients who had experienced our work first-hand, whilst others cycled in memory of loved ones, as a personal challenge, or as a team.

At 78 years young, Kevon Rendell from Beaminster was the oldest participant on the day, whilst 11-year-old Annabel Hyland from Sherborne was the youngest, showing the event’s suitability for all ages and abilities.

Everyone was keen to support our life-saving work and raise as much as possible. The total amount raised will be announced in due course once all sponsorship monies have come in. We will then announce the special winner of the Hugo Yaxley Trophy for best fundraiser.

Emma Jones, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Fundraising Manager said:

This was our first ever Race from the Base event and wow, what a fabulous day it was. The sun shone brightly, there was laughter and smiles everywhere and the courage and determination of the cyclists was inspiring for us all to see. It was so lovely to hear people say how brilliant the cycle routes were and how well the event was organised, so you won’t be surprised to know that we will be doing it all again next year. My thanks go to everyone who took part or supported the event and made it so special.

Next up is our 5K Twilight Shift which is once again being held at Henstridge Airfield on Saturday 23rd September. Join us for a 5K run or walk which will once again be raising funds for our life-saving charity - we’ll be announcing details soon and would love to see you there.

Special thanks go to the following for supporting our Race from the Base event: Geoff Jarvis, Garador, Fiddleford Inn, Tom, Amanda and Charles Yaxley, Ed Highnam, Sandroyd School, Somerset Road Safety, Jolly Jumpers, Jen’s Ice Cream, Devon Freewheelers Blood Bikes, DocBike, Paul Richie’s Steam Engines, Keep106 radio, Espressoul Coffee, Glastonbury Spring Water and The Bicycle Chain.
