After seriously injuring his arm, Shane Guy was flown to hospital for emergency surgery…

Last summer, Shane Guy was working on a rooftop with his electric chopsaw when the blade sliced through his arm in a terrible accident. Shane had just sent his workmate down from the roof for his lunch break and was about to join him when the accident happened. Luckily, there were people close by who heard him cry out for help and they were able to call for the emergency services.

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance attended Shane’s incident and airlifted him to Southampton Hospital. After an initial assessment, he was subsequently flown to Salisbury Hospital where a specialist medical team were waiting. He went straight in for emergency surgery to save his arm, which lasted over six hours.

Fast forward six months and we were delighted that Shane and his wife Jess could visit us at our Henstridge airbase. There, they presented the Charity with £2,000, which was raised via various fundraising activities. The largest was a party attended by suppliers, customers and associates of Shane’s business, Stag Home Improvements.

It was Shane’s left hand that was damaged and he has since learnt how to use it differently. He is back to work and although will never regain the full use of his arm, hand and fingers, he continues to produce carpentry of the highest standards.

“Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance saved my life,” he says. “The hospital surgeons saved my arm. I was so pleased to be able to meet the team and say thank you in person.

“We owe them such a lot and I want to do as much as I can to help them in their valuable work to save others.”
