Verwood grandfather runs rings round youngsters at Olympic Park

April 6, 2012

A super-fit grandfather from Verwood in Dorset was among 5,000 runners who made history by crossing the Olympic Stadium finish line last week.

Brian Long, 63, put many younger athletes in the shade when he finished the five-mile run around the Olympic Park in 40 minutes and three seconds.  The retired postman, who is also a keen cyclist, raised £750 for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Brian said: “It was an incredible day. I try to take part in a run once a fortnight but nothing is going to compare with the Olympic Park Run.”

After suffering a heart attack four years ago, Brian had life-saving surgery. Despite being on medication for the rest of his life, he still cycles about 100 miles a week.

He said: “Running is my life. My eldest daughter Vanessa is also a keen runner and my wife Julie times me. I will never forget finishing inside the stadium.”
