Hairdresser Mandy Foot is having her head shaved for charity in memory of her brother Dean Gregory.

Popular Shepton sportsman Dean died in September 2009, after a long brave battle against cancer. He was 37.

Dean was voted Whitstone’s Sportsman of the Year in 1988 and went on to play football for Wells, Shepton Mallet and Pilton, cricket for Cranmore and he was also a popular member of the UB8 skittles team.

Dean worked at Uniq in Evercreech as a laboratory technician for 17 years and was training to be an accountant before he died.

“Mandy was determined to do some fund-raising to mark Dean’s birthday – he would have been 40 in March this year, and she will be 43 in May,” explained proud Mum Pam Gregory.

A significant part of the Charity’s work involves the help of volunteers.  We are extremely fortunate to have a wonderful team of existing volunteers who regularly donate their time.  We have a busy few months ahead of us as the summer season begins and we are looking to recruit NEW volunteers to join our team. 

Event Support – attend events on our behalf, sell merchandise and meet the public

Box Collectors – help us collect existing and distribute new collection boxes to outlets in your area.

Cheque Presentations – receive cheques on the Charity’s behalf at events and meetings (this may involve giving a short speech or an expression of thanks).

Become a Speaker – Stand in front of an audience and give a Powerpoint presentation to groups of all sizes.

We are standing by, in hope that you will pick up the phone or email us and donate some of your time to our cause.  By joining our team, you can expect all the support you need.  You can choose to do just one of the above, or mix and match depending on the amount of time you have spare.

Don’t forget that there is another fantastic fundraising day taking place on Sunday May 20^th!  Apart from our Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge, the annual RITS Day will once again be full of action and entertainment, raising funds for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. 

Last year, this amazing group of people donated £9,000 to the Charity and this year’s entertainment line-up, looks incredible!

Riders In The Sky was formed after Lee Baker was killed on 8th November 2010.  He was a good friend, brother, son and father.  Lee was a keen motorcyclist and was also a dedicated charity supporter, raising money for a variety of causes.

Taking place at Tor Leisure in Glastonbury this year’s event will include an Auction and Raffle, Live bands, a Children’s Circus Workshop, Children’s Rides and Face Painting.  There will be a Storm Trooper appearance, Football, Darts and Skittles competitions, Interactive Salls and Car Displays.

Swoooosh that down with a Hog Roast, Cider Bar and Hot and cold refreshments and you have a day to remember!

NEWS JUST IN:  On 6th May, some of the members of the R.I.T.S team will be running a gruelling ’round the Tor’ 10k road run to raise yet more money for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.  It’s one of the largest races in the county of Somerset, starting and finishing a stone’s throw away from the alleged burial place of King Arthur within the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey.  Not only are the R.I.T.S team taking on this challenge, but some of them have decided to do it in their full length motorbike leathers!

There were great celebrations at Beer Club last Friday evening when the Axe Valley Runners (AVR) were delighted to hand out a record sum of over £42,000 to 52 various groups.

On top of this sum AVR had previously paid £3,300 for a substantial upgrade to the footpath linking the Fountain Head at Branscombe to the main coastal path as part of the Grizzly strategy of bringing benefit to the local community.

The Seaton and District Hospital League of Friends were given the largest donation of £10,000 towards the Seaton Home Health Care Service that enables people to die peacefully in their own homes .

The Devon Air Ambulance Trust received £6,184 and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance was given £3,000.

Add this years total to all that AVR had previously given away as a result of the Grizzly run and it brings the overall total to over £250,000. A cracking achievement for a small running club.

Allum & Sidaway, an independent, family run jewellers established in 1942 are setting themselves a challenge to celebrate their 70^th Anniversary this year.

Raising funds for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance, all five of the company’s stores will ask their customers for donations and sponsorship as they undertake a 70 mile bike ride at the prestigious Thruxton Race Circuit on July 8^th 2012.

The five stores, located in Shaftesbury, Gillingham, Salisbury, Dorchester and Ringwood aim to raise as much as possible for the Charity via the bike challenge and will also be donating the proceeds from watch batteries sold during the month of June.

This event will be supporting the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support.

There will be a six-a-side Football Tournament during the day which kicks off at 9:00am.  The final will take place at 1pm and the presentation at 1.30pm.

Fun day activities will include:  Bungee Run, Face painting, Bouncy castles, Surfing simulator, Children’s craft zone, Bell Street Café Jazz Band, Wacky Races and Sports Day games and refreshement will be available on the day.
