  2. Air Ambulance Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge Fully Booked!

December 17, 2015 by Lara Lucas

The start of C2C at Watchet Harbour HR-001Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance is delighted to announce that their 6th annual Coast to Coast (C2C) Cycle Challenge is now fully booked for 2016.

The event, which is not a race involves cycling through some of Dorset and Somerset’s most beautiful countryside and takes place on Sunday 15th May 2016.

With only 600 places available and demand expected to be high, it was no surprise that within 3 days and 4 hours of the Charity announcing on-line registration open, all places had been filled.

Last year’s event saw cyclists of all ages and abilities take part, raising over £64,000 for the life-saving Charity.

The Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge offers two different routes and distances.  For those who like a challenge, the brilliant 54 mile cycle which starts in the Somerset port of Watchet and finishes at West Bay near Bridport will not disappoint.

With a mixture of quiet back roads, interspersed with some very demanding climbs and equally hairy descents, the event has something to offer for everyone!  For those that don’t want to cycle that far, there is a shorter 11 mile route which begins at Drimpton in Dorset and also finishes at West Bay.

Bill Sivewright, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Chief Executive Officer said:

“Our Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge has once again proved ever popular.  We always knew there would be a demand for places, but to have sold out within 3 days and 4 hours of registration being open is amazing and a credit to everyone involved whether they be organising, volunteering or taking part.

“This will be our sixth year in the saddle and every year seems to get better and better.  With such a demand for places, there will undoubtedly be those who are disappointed not to gain a place.  We hope that they will continue to support the Charity and the cyclists taking part, by joining us on the day both at the start, on-route and at the finishing line celebrations.

“For thosDSAA in actione who have been fortunate enough to gain a place, we hope that they will encourage their friends and families to sponsor them so that we can raise as much as possible and make this the best Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge yet.” Individuals in the over 16 and under 16 catagories who raise the highest amount through sponsorship, will win a brand new bicycle courtesy of Bicycle Chain Ltd!

Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance has flown  more than 10,900 missions since its launch in March 2000, saving many lives and aiding recovery with outstanding immediate care and rapid delivery to the hospital best suited to meet the patient’s needs.  With no direct Government or National Lottery funding, we rely on the generosity of the public and events like Coast to Coast for support.

  5. Dorset Wedding with a Difference!

December 8, 2015 by Lara Lucas

pam and ed 2Pam and Ed Bowditch from Bowood in Dorset had a wedding with a difference! The couple who are both young farmers and love the outdoors, decided to hold their wedding ceremony in a field locally to where they live. After the bride made a sensational entrance on her 17hh warmblood horse, they were wed by a humanist in a ‘church’ that Ed constructed from straw bales.

Instead of guests paying for drinks at the bar, the couple asked for donations to go to the Charity which totalled £1,200. Beaminster Young Farmers were on hand to help serve the drinks and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance volunteers Pam Eamer and Ron Bishop were thrilled to be invited to the special day. We wish the happy couple all the very best for the future and send a big thanks from us all!

“We are thrilled to be able to announce the date for our Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge 2016.  This will be our sixth year in the saddle and every year seems to get better and better.

In order to keep the event as safe as possible and encourage all standards of cyclists to take part without fear of being overcrowded, we are once again restricting our numbers to 600 cyclists.  Last year we created a staggered start which saw the stronger cyclists setting off first.  This was very successful and we will continue with this for 2016.A hug at the finish line

“With such a demand, there will undoubtedly be those who are disappointed not to gain a place, which is why I cannot stress enough, how important it is to register early!  We are really looking forward to this years’ event and hope that everyone that enters will once again encourage their family and friends to sponsor them in a bid to make this the best Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge yet.”
