Amy Smith qualifies for the GB Rowing Team Start Programme

December 20, 2013 by Tracy

Amy SmithTaunton Rowing Club is pleased to announce that Amy Smith has qualified to take part in the GB Rowing Team Start Programme.  The programme aims to identify and develop potential Olympians.  Since its inception in 2001 this lottery funded programme has been so successful that a third of the London 2012 Olympic Rowers came through the programme.

Amy’s selection is a testament to her hard work and dedication in overcoming a previous illness which saw her having to withdraw from an earlier development programme.  She attributes her current success to Taunton Rowing Club coaches Ian Payne and Steve Sanger-Davies who she says helped her to “regain my confidence and fitness and gave me the chance to try again.”

Taking part in the Start Programme requires dedication and commitment and will see Amy travelling three times every week to Bath for training as well as continuing her training with Taunton Rowing Club.  Amy says that she feels very lucky to have been given this chance to make the most of her potential “but like most things the travelling is going to cost and I am currently looking into ways to cover the cost of this, so if anyone knows of any local companies that would possibly sponsor me in any way I would very much appreciate it” adding:

“My aim is to take part in the Olympics. This selection will give me the opportunity to train to that end but even if I get into the squad but don’t get picked for the GB team it will still be an experience of a life time.”

Even though Amy will be training in Bath three times a week she will still be based in Taunton for the rest of her training.  Because of this Amy says that she is  “really pleased to hear that the proposed COACH sports community hub in Taunton has received planning permission as a facility like that will really help myself and others to maximise our sporting potential.   We need as much support behind the project as possible so if you have a free couple of minutes, please use that time to complete the survey and help me and others like me to get the most out of our sport in Taunton.”

Amy is the daughter of Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance Clerical Assistant, Sam Smith.  A big congratulations and best wishes is sent from us all!
