Santa Stride Huge Success!

Santa StrideThe Sturminster Newton Rotary launched their first Santa Stride on Sunday 8th December in aid of Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and were overwhelmed by the attendance of over 230 enthusiastic people all dressed in Santa suits.

The event which took place along the Trailway from Sturminster Newton to Hamoon and return (a total of 3.6 miles) was started by the Town Crier (Kevin Knapp) in association with the President of Sturminster Rotary, Malcolm Parker.

Two horse riders, one of which had previously been airlifted by the Air Ambulance, led the procession that was then followed by the runners, cyclists, pram pushers and “dawdlers” (some with dogs suitably attired as reindeers).

Santa Stride 2Also participating was Claire Wilson from Blandford, who sustained serious injuries after a road traffic accident in September and was also airlifted by the Air Ambulance. She sustained some 16 fractures and internal injuries along with 3 separate breaks in her leg, which is now heavily pinned.  Claire courageously completed 2.6 miles of the course and as a result has, alone, raised in excess of £1,600 in support of the Santa Stride for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. She has stated that next year she will “run” the course.Santa Stride 3

In addition the Sturminster Newton Rotary has also raised over £1,000 from this event (the final figure is yet to be confirmed).  Our sincere thanks to her and to the Factory Shop for the use of their forecourt and to everyone who took part in this event that truly brought the spirit of Christmas to Sturminster Newton.

The full generosity of the participants and sponsors will be delivered to the Air Ambulance in the New Year after the “Burns Night” Dinner/Dance on 25th January in the Exchange, Sturminster Newton, which is also in aid of Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

Tickets are £25 a head and can be purchased at Sweet Solutions in Sturminster Newton or from the Sturminster Newton Rotary - contact Des O’Connor 01258 473162 or email: desoc68@btinternet.com
