Wilkinsons staff Team members from five Wilko stores in the South West recently left dry land behind to take part in a day of dragon boat racing, and raised an oar-some £1,100 for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.   Team members from Taunton, Weston Super Mare, Bridgwater, Yeovil and Weymouth were left with aching muscles after taking part in dragon boat races against 250 other Wilko team members from South Wales, the Midlands and the South West.

The race took place on The Quay in Exeter, with eight boats full of Wilko team members and charity representatives taking to the water in total.  The event raised an impressive £4,416 overall which was split between five different air ambulance charities.

Shaun Boore, store manager at Taunton, who organised the whole event, said: “The Exeter charity boat race was an amazing event, with team members from some stores travelling hundreds of miles to get there. There were so many team members taking part, which made it a really exciting and quite competitive day!

“Organising the event was such hard work, but it all paid off when I saw everyone on the water battling for first place – and striving to raise money for their local air ambulance charities. The fact that the event ultimately managed to raise over £4,000 is immensely satisfying. In fact, the dragon boat race went so well that we’re thinking of making it an annual thing.”
